With multiple other writers at training camp for the Chiefs and me not being there I will try to summarize all the latest camp buzz for the team.
Guess Who's Been Making Noise?
Rashee Rice was my No. 1 prospect at the wideout spot for the 2023 NFL draft. I mentioned back in January that he has all the makings of a receiver that Mahomes has never experienced. Following a bit of a rough day one in which Rice threw up at practice Rashee has been causing a lot of buzz with his contested catches at practice.
UDFA Could Push for Touches
Deneric Prince's name has seemed to be buzzing ever since the rookie minicamp months ago. His hype has now taken an even bigger step following an injury to Pacheco prior to training camp. He has been reportedly unstoppable and also has been used heavily with the starters. Look out for this guy to be the final domino for CEH's departure.
Old Giants Receiver Speedy as Ever
Richie James has made big strides over his last several years after being selected in the 7th round out of Middle Tennessee. He went form depth piece on the 49ers to the Giants second leading receiver in 2022. Most people wrote him off of making the squad in 2023, but so far, he has impressed a lot of people at camp. Watch out for this guy to make the 53-man roster.
A Big Injury Update
With the Chiefs losing Juju Smith-Schuster and not bringing in a lot of veteran help Kadarius Toney was expected to take on the WR1 role for the offense. However, Chiefs fans were concerned about one thing when it comes to his ability and that is his health. Reaggravating a knee injury that he had a procedure on is never a good sign. I will also mention that a decent part of Toney's shiftiness is reliant on his knee flexibility so even if he is to play banged up week one, don't expect him to be the same play maker. If injuries continue to be a concern, you have a lot of young talent to back him up.
The Diamond in the Rough
Justyn Ross had an incredibly impressive start to his college career becoming Trever Lawerence's leading receiver over the likes of Tee Higgins. Unfortunately for Ross his career would take a dramatic turn whoever he had to have spinal fusion surgery during an offseason. This caused his numbers to fall significantly the remainder of his time at Clemson. He went undrafted last year in which the Chiefs picked him up hoping his freshman year talent was still within him. Justyn didn't quite make the cut last year due to a separate injury but made some plays during training camp. this year he seems to have taken another step and has been frequently involved in first team reps. If he can stay healthy and somehow get back to that form, he used to have at Clemson he has by far the highest ceiling out of any WR on the roster.
A Long Shot QB
The crowd has gone dead silent, a Cinderella story, out of nowhere. Former Bearcat is now about to become the starting Quarterback. Travis Kelce is a 33-year-old rookie QB out of the University of Cincinnati. He has a long way to go, but don't let that fool you this guy has some upside at the TE position if things don't work out. All jokes aside I love that the Chiefs do fun stuff like this. the guys always seem to work very hard in the offseason, so it is well deserved!
